Automata Workshop at Museum of Craft and Design
Yesterday I had the pleasure of instructing a automata workshop at San Francisco's Museum of Craft and Design

I wanted to give workshop attendees the idea of mechanisms behind a kinetic art piece, specifically Chris Eckert's work Party Gift, on display at the MCD. So I worked up a version of the moving eyeball that could be constructed using foamcore and skewers:

Later, I incorporated these plastic doll eyes which were close to human-sized thus even creepier. Given it was the first time I had given the workshop, it turned out pretty well. Everyone who came built something neat; most stuck to the original design but a few used it as license for creativity!
